PINOTAGE

Lighter, fruitier Pinotage — fresh red fruit, mulberries, cherries & plums with fine tannins.

About This Wine

The Atypical Red is a Pinotage like no other - lighter, fruitier, and approachable, more akin to its parent cultivars, Pinot Noir and Cinsault. We wanted to break free from the heaviness often associated with Pinotage, instead making a wine that invites exploration, that nods to history while carving its own path. Blend: Pinotage 100%. WO: Stellenbosch. Viticulture: Uniquely South African Pinotage, grown on granite and red clay soils of the Jonkershoek valley. This trellised vineyard is pruned, managed and harvested by hand. Winemaking: Whole berry fermentation for 1 week in traditional open-top concrete fermenters (kuipe) with manual punch downs 2-3 times per day. The free run juice underwent malolactic conversion and was matured for 9 months in stainless steel 225L barrels. Bottled unfiltered. Tasting notes: Aromas of fresh red fruit and spice on the nose. The palate reminds one of mulberries plucked from the tree and ate as kids, cherries and plums integrated with a velvety mouthfeel and fine tannins. Structure is well balanced with the fresh acidity and layers of fruit. Analysis: Alcohol: 13.42%, Residual Sugar: 2.33 g/L, Total Acidity: 5.25g/L, pH: 3.63. Not for sale to a person under 18.
